FSC and WWF Promote FSC-certified Products in China
05.17.2016

FSC China, WWF China and the Japanese retail group Aeon recently co-hosted an event to promote sustainable consumption and FSC-certified products to consumers in China

Six FSC-certified companies, including Kimberly Clark, SIG Combibloc and Tetra Pak, presented their paper and packaging products at the event, which was held in a shopping mall. One of these, Sun Paper, a major Chinese paper producer, presented their newly certified photocopying paper and tissue brands.

WWF’s Global Forest and Trade Network Program Director, Jin Zhonghao, stressed the importance of raising public awareness in China through events such as this: “We hope that consumers can recognize and accept sustainable forest products, so that we can transform the market and have the global forests responsibly managed.”

There are over 4,000 FSC chain of custody certificates in China. While these are mostly in the export sector, the continuous economic growth and ever-growing middle class mean that the domestic market for FSC-certified products is likely to expand in the future. China is also the largest producer and consumer of paper in the world, and demand is constantly rising.

During other activities at the event, 30 children learnt more about the value of forests through an interactive education session, hosted by FSC China. FSC’s China Representative, Ma Lichao addressed the media at a briefing, sharing FSC’s unique system to promote responsible forest management, as well as FSC’s new marketing toolkit.

WWF China hopes to encourage Chinese consumers to practice sustainable consumption in their daily lives, in order to mitigate the negative effects of climate change. Using FSC-certified paper and wood products is one way to contribute to this, as it reduces deforestation.
